Story
”O,” she exclaimed as she looked down at those dainty blue slippers that she had been given last Christmas, “O, Nana will not like this, will she? No, she will not like this at all!” And so Charlotte gathered her skirts and ran up the little French stairs that led to one of Charleston’s many wells. She was particularly fond of Rose Market’s little white one (with that lovely pink roof) but it was so frightfully far away today and she was in such a hurry that she would even deign to using the Grey Street one, had she been so obliged. Luckily, the one she now approached was a quite respectable little stone construction, and she proceeded immediately to wash what remained of Mr. Wilson off her shoes.
One cannot really blame Charlotte for cleaning them, for they were quite expensive, and Mr. Wilson had never been known to be a particularly cleanly man, so she felt he oughtn’t to be allowed on her best pair, quite like how Nana forbade Lucy from treading on the carpet when her fur was wet. Also, red clashed so terribly with pastel blue that her eyes would have hurt every time she wore them.
